DESIGN INTERN - ADULT BOOK GROUP

becker&mayer!, a premier book producer located in Seattle, WA, is seeking a design intern for the Adult Book Group. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

Design:

• Participate in designing book covers, jackets, and book interiors.
• Design, develop, refine, and mock-up package and book design in preparation for presentation and production.
• Present and discuss designs to fellow designers and project team members.

Research:

• Take part in discussions with editorial, production, design, sales and marketing departments during the book development process to realize a collective vision.
• Help research creative talent such as illustrators, photographers, and designers.
• Help scout images for specific book projects.
• Help research background information for individual book projects.

Production:

• Maintenance of design area, including filing and archiving.
• Scan, organize, and log artwork.
• Editorial type corrections.
• Typographic composition.
• Check over mechanicals and collect files for output.
• Photocopy and laser print.
• Work with team and production coordinators to color correct proofs.
• "Comp" book jackets, covers, spreads, and overall package for presentation and sales materials.
• Coordinate deliveries.
• Assist in photographing product shots for various projects.
• Attend and participate in department and company meetings.
• Participate in discussions and critiques with fellow designers.

Experience/Skills:

• Strong interest in book design and page layout.
• Strong typographic skills and sense of color.
• Graduation from an accredited graphic design program.
• Thorough knowledge of Adobe InDesign; good familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Word.
• Strong communication skills, written and verbal, in English.
• Prioritizational, multitasking, and organizational skills.
• Interpersonal and collaborative skills.
• Knowledge of offset printing techniques and photography skills are a plus.

Editors demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, prioritization, time management, and organizational skills. The Editor will enhance the editorial goals of the Adult Book Group by originating, developing, and managing complex titles from concept to publication. Editors demonstrate a high level of initiative, and drive processes to meet departmental and company-wide goals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage the editorial process on assigned titles from concept to publication.
• Work with team members on assigned projects.
• Serve as primary contact with author, publisher, and estate as needed.

PRODUCTION COORDINATOR - ADULT BOOK GROUP

becker&mayer!, a premiere book producer for major publishers, located in Seattle, WA is seeking a production coordinator. The Production Coordinator, Adult Book Group is responsible for overseeing the manufacturing process of assigned titles in a cost effective and creative manner. The Production Coordinator has a broad understanding of all aspects of book and book-plus manufacturing, including four-color and duotone processes, paper & binding, knowledge of overseas printing, and has the ability to manage a substantial and complex workload of projects under tight deadlines. The Production Coordinator has strong communication and organizational skills, strong negotiation skills, is proactive, can troubleshoot and follow-up on issues on a continual basis. The Production Coordinator works with other members in the production department to problem solve the more difficult issues. Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Acts as a liaison between the editors, designers, film houses, and printers to effectively communicate specifications, corrections, changes, and concerns that arise throughout the production process on a varied list of titles.
• Provides request for quotes.
• Creates manufacturing purchase orders.
• Reviews and disseminates pricing of the most cost effective and capable vendor.
• Monitors the schedule from design transmittal through the shipping of books.
• Tracks all charges incurred while books are in production and approves invoices upon project completion.
• Brainstorms and trouble-shoots on any pre-production problems and sources materials for any non-traditional titles.
• Communicates all issues and necessary instructions to film house and printer regarding corrections on proofs. Reviews outgoing materials such as film, proofs, and blues.
• Sources new vendors and stays updated on industry standards and progressions.
• Suggests manufacturing and packaging design options.
• Requests sales sample bulking dummies.

The Product Developer is responsible for children's safety testing on assigned products. This position develops and manages overseas sources. The Product Developer works on multiple projects and proposals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Originates packaging and product ideas.
• Provides request for quotes with mechanical drawings to guarantee accurate specifications.

• Monitors the schedule from approval to manufacturing to shipping of book product.

FOREIGN & SPECIAL SALES ASSOCIATE - SALES & MARKETING

becker&mayer!, a premiere book producer for major publishers, located in Seattle, WA is seeking a Foreign & Special Sales Associate. The Foreign & Special Sales Associate is responsible for support and development of Foreign & Special Sales, coordinating and organizing all foreign trade shows, and providing support to the Foreign Sales Group.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assists with the secondary selling of b&m! books and SmartLab toys to select international publishers and Special Sales accounts.
• Acts as the primary contact, takes ownership of, and is responsible for overall management of specified account base.
• Sources and brings new clients to b&m!.
• Manages and updates the internal database on all proposals and samples sent to assigned foreign publishers and accounts.
• Creates pricing and project deals under supervision of Sales Director.
• Coordinates with Adult and Juvenile teams to acquire customer samples as needed.
• Obtains information and leads launch meetings for all title sales.
• Assists in creating and; developing the Foreign Rights Catalogue. Oversees the maintenance of the internal database Rights Catalogue as appropriate.
• Participates in product development discussions and communicates customer preferences to product teams, as appropriate.
• Attends Adult and Juvenile new titles meetings to actively participate in originating and refining new ideas.
• Oversees the coordination of all international trade shows, including travel, booth arrangements, and sample inventory.
• Assists with twice yearly sales conference, coordinating adult and juvenile team presentations.
• Attends international foreign trade shows as appropriate.

• Trade Show Support:
  
  • Coordinate and organize international book trade shows including budgeting and invoices, registration of booth space, furniture and other booth services, mockup coordination, delivering mockups and materials to fairs, and other arrangements, as needed.
  • Coordinate post trade show and follow-up for foreign sales group, or as needed.
• Foreign Sales Support:
  
  • Manage and track the foreign sample send out process, from mockup coordination to shipping finished copies, in conjunction with trade show follow-up and requests from foreign publishers.
  • Track paper cutoff and FOB dates on upcoming projects with foreign appeal, update FOB Reference sheet, and create calendars of dates for foreign publishers.
  • Update checklists, track proposals, and enter new contacts into database.
  • Create and maintain budget spreadsheets as assigned by Director of Sales.

Experience/Skills:

• Ability to travel 30% or less.
